Oregon Trail Interpretive Center in Baker City

Baker City calls itself "On the Historic Oregon Trail," and one of the best places to see why is just outside town.

The center

The National Historic Oregon Trail Interpretive Center is run by the Bureau of Land Management. The BLM gives its address as 22267 Highway 86, seven miles east of Baker City, and describes it as a historic and cultural site that presents the 19th-century journey of pioneers who traveled west on the trail. Wikipedia says it sits atop Flagstaff Hill, with a 23,000-square-foot building, exhibits, living history programs and more than four miles of interpretive trails. Exhibit themes include natural history, Native Americans, pioneer life and the mining and settlement of Northeast Oregon.

The trail itself

Wikipedia reports that wagon ruts from emigrants on the Oregon Trail are still visible at Flagstaff Hill near Baker City. Hours and fees change, and the BLM page sends visitors to the Vale District Office for current information.
