Elkhorns and Anthony Lakes in Baker City

West of Baker City the Elkhorn Mountains rise above the valley. They are part of the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest, whose Supervisor's Office is in Baker City.

The national forest

The Forest Service describes the Wallowa-Whitman as 2.4 million acres of public land in northeastern Oregon and western Idaho, with terrain from alpine peaks of the Elkhorn, Seven Devils and Wallowa Mountains down to Snake River canyons. Current conditions, closures and fire danger are on the forest's pages.

Anthony Lake

Recreation.gov lists the Anthony Lake Campground, part of the Wallowa-Whitman, at 7,100 feet on a bluff above Anthony Lake in the Elkhorn Mountains. Listed activities include paddling, trout fishing, hiking, horseback riding, backpacking and mountain biking, with a boat ramp at the camp. The 22.6-mile Elkhorn Crest trail allows hiking and horseback riding. The Forest Service also lists the Anthony Lakes Guard Station, a historic log cabin built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps. Reservations and fees are handled on Recreation.gov, and mountain access can be seasonal.
